I just love singers. I believe that they are the “players” of the perfect instrument: the human voice. But, in order to have this instrument in perfect conditions and for a long time, namely years, and “retire” as late as possible, here’s 7 steps to take so your instrument will be in perfect health and tune.
Learn how to breathe
Complete breathing requires a relaxed body. That means, when you inhale, the only part of you is the belly, that inflates as you inhale. When exhaling the belly goes back, with a little help from the muscles so the air from your lungs is released completely. Be careful not to move your shoulders. You need to fill your lungs completely, not half way. And besides, you’re not doing any cardio.
2. When you emit sounds have the image of blurring a mirror
Once you learn how to exhale, in a very relaxed posture, it’s time for you to let the sounds go out. Again, nothing moves but the belly. On the air column you just release sounds. Relax throat. It’s all about releasing, not forcing. Use a mirror if you must. If it blurs you’re doing it well.
3. Train your ear
A good singer can tune his instrument. Even if you sing with a piano accompaniment or in a band, or even better, with an orchestra, you should know that there are instruments very difficult to tune. That is why any others are taking its “A”. Take your “As” every day, more times a day, checking with the instrument you have in the house. This will tune your instrument in a perfect pitch.
4. Smile while singing
As I was saying, your voice is an instrument that we have to keep in very good shape. Now it’s time to develop your resonance box. Facial bones play this role. Only if you let them. Smiling, or better yet showing some upper teeth, will give the chance of that wanted vibration to amplify, so the voice can be heard in the plenitude of its beauty.
5. Relax tongue
Even if you use words as a singer the tongue should be on the bottom of the mouth. To make sure the sound is not stopped by it. We’re nervous when we appear in public. Even so, the tip of the tongue has to reach the lower teeth. Never the upper.
6. Enunciate
Before you start singing, of course after the warm up that I just described, take your time and recite the verses of the song. Make sure you enunciate like you are telling the words to a stadium full with people and you don’t have a mike. Don’t shout. The breathing, the smile and the mirror image should be enough.
7. Practice every day
Now this is the most difficult part. But, since you want to be a professional you have to make these a routine. So find time every day. At least 15 minutes. Or 5 just for the breathing. It’s your instrument. And you want to keep it in shape.
And in case you didn't know, confidence. Because music is what you are and you need to say that.
